4 Quick Tips for Keeping Carpets Clean Year Round

A clean carpet is a healthy carpet, and a room with a clean carpet is a much more pleasant environment for you, your family and your guests to socialise in. The cleanliness and freshness of something that covers an entire room is going to have an impact on yours and your guests perception of your home. A room with a clean, fresh-smelling carpet is a pleasant and comfortable environment, whilst a room with a dirty, dully and smelly carpet is quite the opposite.

Like clothing, our carpets need to be kept clean and fresh in order for them to be hygienic. A dirty carpet is the perfect environment for mites and other uninvited guests. Eliminating mites and bacteria reduces the risk of allergies, mould and many other potential problems. Not only does a dirty carpet lead to health risks for yourself and your family, it also damages the carpet over time, leading to the need for new carpets more often. And, when you consider the costs of regular vacuuming and cleaning of your carpet compared to buying a new one, it’s definitely worth the small investment.

As well as a clean carpet resulting in a healthier environment, the appearance and the smell of your carpet will be much better, making your room more pleasant to be in for you and your visitors. And the visible dirt is a mere 15 percent of what’s actually on the carpet. The other 85 percent in buried deep within the fibres.

So, what can we do to keep our carpet clean and fresh year round? Here’s Bailey’s Floor Care’s top tips for a clean and healthy carpet:

1. Eradicate loose dirt… often.

If you can banish any loose dirt before it gets trodden deep into the fibres of your carpet, you’re eliminating what could potentially be a tricky (and expensive) problem. Hoover regularly in high traffic areas before loose, dry dirt becomes dense, hard grit that’s been trodden deep into your carpet.

Emptying your vacuum cleaner and quickly cleaning the filter will massively improve the performance and maximise how much dirt it picks up. Also, vacuum slowly enough for the dirt to be extracted. Many people rush hoovering, meaning dirt gets thrown around by the vacuum but not picked up.

Quick tip: Using walk-off mats will dramatically reduce the amount of dirt that gets brought into your house. Coarse-textured mats outside your doors remove soil, whilst water-absorbent mats inside prevent wet shoes rubbing mud off onto the carpet.

2. DIY steam cleaning.

Whilst it’s recommended you have your carpet cleaned professionally around once a year, it’s cost effective to mix it up and hire a steam cleaner for your carpet now and again. If you know what you’re doing, steam cleaners can be very effective at cleaning carpets. They won’t produce the same results and the equipment a professional has, but the results will be good nonetheless.

A steam cleaner can be hired cheaply, or even bought if you plan to use it regularly in the future. If you’re hiring, remember that some stores will rent a steam cleaner to you for half the price if you rent from the afternoon onwards, as you’re only paying for half a day, even if you’re not returning the steam cleaner until the next morning.

3. Tackle stains the right way, right away.

As you may already know, stains should be tackled early for the best results. But, stains must also be treated using specific methods. If you’re unsure about how to treat a stain, quickly check online for the best solutions. We’ve talked previously about red wine stain solutions.

One thing most people don’t know is that 80% of everyday stains can be removed using just water. By dampening a clean cloth and blotting (not rubbing or scrubbing), most stains can be easily removed. Try and blot from the outside of the stain, inwards. This will reduce the chances of the stain spreading outwards.

If water isn’t successfully removing a stain, try a combination of white vinegar and water or club soda. If unsuccessful, try using commercial stain removal products, but we recommend you test these products before using them on visible areas of your carpet, as some may change the texture or colour, resulting in an all-new stain.

4. Be picky with carpet cleaning professionals.

When it comes to choosing a company to clean your carpets, be as fussy as you want. Many ‘professionals’ simply offer a one-suits-all solution to cleaning carpets, whilst other more experienced carpet cleaners will treat your carpet depending on the material and colour, ensuring much better results. Choose a company with extensive experience and a good reputation in their area. Look for testimonials and reviews from recent customers and ask as many questions as you want before proceeding. We’ve previously written a post on what to ask a carpet cleaner before they clean your carpets.
